Pupdate: Akela

When I first did my 'introducing' post for Akela I had had him for about a week and he was only about 10 weeks old. Now he is just past 5 months old and has been part of our lives for about 3 months I thought I would give you a little update on his progress. Here's what you need to know:

  • He now weighs over 20kg and stands at 60cm tall (to the withers)
  • His tail and ears are both still too large for his body.
  • He is very smart and is picking up commands and general obedience very well - his puppy destruction has mostly been confined to cardboard and papers.
  • He is very vocal and lets us know if anyone walks past the back gate or comes to the mailbox.
  • He is quickly learning his own strength and to change it based on his opponent - he is very gentle when he plays with Jack but knows how to rough and tumble when he's playing with a larger friend.
  • He now sleeps most of the night through, only getting up once to go outside.
  • he's very snuggly and thinks he's a big lap dog... I may encourage him a bit!

Introducing: Akela

I thought my introducing posts were done and then this happened – meet Akela:

One Wednesday evening I drove to Burra and picked up this little bundle of fluff – he’s been in our lives for about two weeks and already he has made a huge dent in our lives! He’s also trying really hard to put a dent in our house! He’s fairly shy but once he gets to know you he has quite a strong and demanding personality. Here’s what you really need to know:

  • His mother was a white shepherd and his father was long haired so he’s very fluffy and will probably have a true long coat.
  • He weighs a little over 10kgs and he’s only about 10 weeks old.
  • He is named after the head wolf in The Jungle Book – being the kind of people we are we have taken the Disney pronunciation rather than the one used in scouts.
  • His nickname is Oops as in ‘oops, I just bought another German Shepherd’
  • He suffers from separation anxiety and cries whenever I leave the room.
  • He's a typical little puppy and has to get his teeth into everything!
  • He's already wholeheartedly stolen my heart!

Weekend Wanderings: Bundaleer Forest

Just a quick update on very lovely weekend. This weekend saw us barely leaving the house, sleeping late, indulging in cheese and wine and a quick and wet trip to Bundaleer Forest to walk this little 3 legged munchkin. Jack's day was utterly made when he found a discarded tennis ball on the oval next to the forest. A few mad games followed, I don't think he's had this much fun since! After thoroughly wearing himself out, and getting sufficiently muddy, at the oval we headed home and he crashed! I think he is a very contented pooch this weekend. And a happy relaxed weekend was just what I needed to recharge too!

Introducing: Captain Jack

I figure I talk about my animals so much on my blog that maybe some of you would like to know a little more about them, so I'm starting a little feature where I introduce them to you. This will either run for six weeks or six months depending on how often I get around to writing these posts! I thought I would start at the beginning by introducing them oldest to youngest.

This is Captain Jack, He will be 9 years old in September. I got Jack as a 3 month old puppy and he has been with me ever since. Here's what you need to know about Jack:

  • He was already names Jack when I got him - I added the Captain for Captain Jack Sparrow or Captain Jack Harkness (depends on the day you ask me!)
  • He lives for chasing his tennis ball and has even worn his teeth down into the correct shape to hold one (the vet says this is fine and doesn't make his teeth sore)
  • He survived a battle with cancer when he was 7.
  • His battle with cancer has left him with only 3 legs - he chooses to believe that extra leg was never necessary.
  • I have seen him run on two legs before.
  • He is a Pomeranian cross something - we don't know what the something is but think it might be some type of terrier due to his attitude.

Hope you like this little insight into this extraordinary little man!
A xx
