Wishlist: Decor

Can you tell I'm getting really excited about home decor lately? Those that know me IRL know that up until late last year I lived in my own home before circumstances changed and I had to move out into a rental. The house I owned was liveable but not pretty so I spent a lot of time stripping things back and repainting or fixing things up and I really miss it! I did't realise just how hard it was going to be to move back into a rental and have to live with all it's issues. Because I can't (read: it would be a waste of time and money) repaint or gut the bathroom and start again I am focusing that time into figuring out exactly how I want things to look. This involves trawling through websites for decor inspiration and ideas: enter wish lists. Here's a few of my latest finds from House & Garden and Kmart (click the links under the photo to shop the items).

Lets take a second to talk about Kmart - it has a negative reputation as being cheap and nasty but wow do they have some good stuff at the moment! Yes, they are cheap but I have to say the things I have purchased from them have been the same quality as stores with much higher price points - colour me impressed! All in all, I'm not at all ashamed of my current love of Kmart! (for the record: This is not sponsored, just passing on how I feel)

I'll quit rambling on now - I think the theme amongst this little collection is self evident without me having to point it out. I like what I like! What do you think? Does marble and pink have a place in your decor?

Homewares Haul

Well hello there, once again I find the week is nearly over and my schedule has been left by the wayside, this time I was knocked down by my allergies and have felt under the weather and extremely itchy all week. Needless to say I have not felt like dressing up or putting on my make up since both those things can extend the duration of my issue - I won't go into any more details as it's not pretty!

Never fear tho, for in absence of a pretty outfit I bring you some very colourful homewares that I bought a few weeks back. I've always been torn between decorating in earthy tones or in bright colours but I think we have finally decided on a colour scheme. With this in mind we are embracing the pastel shades of pink, yellow and teal (with the occasional splash of red, since that is one of Mark's favourite colours - and how can you have Mickey Mouse without red tones!) To satisfy my desires for soft earthy neutrals our base will be soft creams, browns and greys with lots of texture! One of these days I might put a little mood board together so you all can see what we have in mind.

In any case, I've rambled enough - to the pictures (said like an adventuring knight with sword raised high!)

Home Inspiration: things to put on my walls

The longer we live in our little rental the more I find myself dreaming of a charming, well decorated and organised home. One morning it occurred to me: why am I waiting? Yes, we could get a phone call any day to say we will be moving out in a month of two but more likely we will still be here for another six month. Yes, we have restrictions in what we can do with this house but that doesn't mean I have to do nothing. With that in mind I've been exploring ideas that can be moved with us when we move - one of those things is wall decorations so here's a little round up of what's been catching my eye recently! For more follow along on my Pinterest!

 ^ Cute and rustic.

^ This obviously needs to wait until after we have our actual home!

^ Pastels, maps, quotes - what's not to love!

^ Because anything Frozen themed is a winner in my books.

^ This is so cute - I bought something similar recently but maybe I need another one?

^ Love this idea and easy enough to DIY and personalise - Watch this space!

Hope you're having a good week!

DIY: Animal Silhouettes

I started this project late last year but I only just got them hung up in the last few weeks and thought I would share this quick DIY with you.

Supplies:

  • Burlap 'canvas'
  • Black permanent marker
  • Black paint
  • Paint brush
  • Animal silhouettes (I used these: rabbit, fox and owl)
  • Printer
Instructions:

1. Print off your animal silhouettes, cut them out and lay them onto your 'canvas'

2. Trace around the image with your black marker

3. Paint the inside of the image black - I used a small paint brush around the edges so as not to go over the lines and a bigger one in the middle to speed up the process.

And thats it! Here's some pictures of where they are hanging now, I think they turned out pretty good.

I can think of lots more animals and designs you could use to make something similar, what design would you use?

Home Inspiration: Craft Storage

At the moment I'm living in a little rental house I like to refer to as 'the shoebox' this is not a loving term so much as a voicing of my frustration at the fact I can barely fit all my things in the place and end up falling over anything and everything (yes, I am also clumsy but this place is crowded, I promise!) While I have been trying to pare down the amount of stuff I have crammed into this place I'm also dreaming of the, hopefully, not to distant future when I get to move out of this little shoebox and into a much larger space! One of the main things I'm dreaming of is being able to have craft room again so I have been madly scouring Pinterest for all the clever ideas on craft storage so I can transform one of the room in our hopefully-soon-to-be-new-house into a crafting haven.

Clockwise from top left:

1. Buttons displayed in glass jars
2. Gallery wall displaying craft supplies
3. A cluttered but organised desk
4. Shelving unit used to store and display scrapbooking paper
5. Baskets to hide a jumble of supplies
6. A colourful and inspiring notice board
7. Glitter stored in vintage salt and pepper shakers

I Finally Have Chairs!

Late last year I bought a secondhand table for about $70 and sold my old set for $50, there was just one problem... the old set included 6 chairs and I had only bought a table! Well, this weekend I solved that problem! In a little second hand shop in Nuriootpa I found a set of four chairs and they were exactly what I was looking for; wooden pressed back chairs with a beautiful design on them. I paid $120 for all four, they need a bit of work but I am very happy with them. It's hard to tell from the photos but they are painted and I am thinking that I will repaint them a creamy white and make some cushions for them out of grain of coffee sacks... I'll keep you posted.
One of the chairs, this one has some damage - missing or replacement supports

You can see the design on the pressed back also where some of the paint is wearing off

Two of the four have a design made from holes on the seat!

All four, side by side, Tribbles investigates!

A New Unit

When we bought our house my husband and I moved from a large four bedroom rental, with massive rooms, to a smaller 3 bedroom home. This caused a few issues as we had bought our furniture to fill the vast spaces of our old house.
As you can see this TV unit clearly doesn't fit into our more modest lounge room! we had spent some money to buy this one new and I didn't feel like shelling out for another new unit so I started to explore the possibilities (i.e. spending far too much time trawling through Pinterest and some beloved home decor blogs). I found this one on Pinterest from Our Blue Front Door:
So the hunt was on for the perfect chest of draws for me to turn into a T.V. unit, had just a few requirements: it had to be solid, cheap and made out of wood - to fit in with the country cottage vibe I had planned for our house. Eventually I came across the perfect piece:

This dresser was old, dirty and had the most horrible paint job but underneath it was solid wood and with a little TLC I knew it would be perfect. I took off the mirror, stripped back the paint and added a shelf were the top draw used to be. Its addition to the lounge room has really opened it up making it feel much bigger! here is the finished product:

have a nice day.
